Van Jones Episode Teaser

Creative Brief

Animate a motion piece as a supporting visual to an amazon music podcast featuring Van Jones.

Execution

Tone and style:

I worked with an art director who was inspired by old propaganda poster's and MTV ads from the 90's. The idea was to create a piece that felt like it was being snipped and assembled by a typewriter and old newspaper.

Animating Old Type:

I used expressions on the timeline of the precomp to change the frame rate and achieve a look that resembled old stop motion. Using an old paper texture, I applied a random expression to bounce the image around the composition and adjusted the frame rate to create a choppy effect. For the text, we simply made cuts to match the choppiness of the frame rate and background.

Animating Percentages:

I drew inspiration from Apple's UI, particularly the dial mechanism used for setting the stopwatch. To recreate this effect, I arranged numbers from 1 to 100% in a line, animating them to shift smoothly from one position to the next. I then applied motion blur and easing to enhance the fluidity and realism of the motion.
